Thank you again for your efforts to make USGS data and services available through MOBAC! Our data looks great!

Just a reminder to all the mobile app payday loans company developers out there, that if you'd like to use USGS data, it is Public domain, so it is completely legal to use in your application. If you have any (technical) questions regarding our services or the data we have available, please feel free to contact USGS's National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC), and we can assist you. Also, let us know if you have any feedback. Some key Points of Contact include:

-Rob Dollison, Product and Service Lead for Delivery: rdollison@usgs.gov
-Rick Brown, Project Manager for Delivery: reb@usgs.gov
-and myself, Brian Fox, Systems Development Branch Chief: bfox@usgs.gov

Thank you again!

I have a question. How can we add the USGS Scanned Topo maps as a source to MOBAC? I find them to be superior to the National Map. Thanks.
Excuse the cross post but Can anyone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me in plain layman's terms how to display the USGS National Map Viewer Other Featured Data/Scanned Topo Maps From USA Topo overlay in MOBAC 1.19 so I can make maps for ORUX again? PLEASE HELP! I would be soooooooooooo grateful!

I have written a simple back country navigation app for Android which uses OpenCycleMaps. I would like to add an offline capability to it. Am I correct in assuming there is a reason why OpenCycleMaps are not available through MOBAC? The app is located here:

Offline downloading has been disallowed by the map source provider of OpenCycleMaps.

See http://sourceforge.net/p/mobac/bugs/182/

Wow! Robert it's been several months and I see you have spoken with Brian Fox at USGS.Gov and 1.9.6 has the USGS National Map Base available!!! Robert, for every backcountry user in the US needing a new source for USGS maps, it's the World Series, the series is tied, we're down by three runs, it's the bottom of the ninth inning, the bases are loaded and I hope Brian Fox will pitch you a high hanging curve ball that you can pulverize for a GRAND SLAM.

Back in late August I was very specific about the USGS National Map Viewer Other Featured Data/Scanned Topo Maps From USA Topo overlay was needed because THAT is the overlay that contains names of terrain features, bodies of water, and trails data that make it useful as a backcountry navigation aid. If you can incorporate THAT overlay onto the USGS Base Map in Mobile Atlas Creator you will be showered with endless accolades from legions of US wilderness wanderers......................... well, Me anyway.

I spoke at length with Brian Fox on the phone and he is a wonderful fellow that really wants to get this data out to users the way they need it. Can you please contact
Brian Fox
Systems Development Branch Chief
USGS

bfox@usgs.gov
and find out if the USGS National Map Viewer Other Featured Data/Scanned Topo Maps From USA Topo overlay can also be displayed on the USGS National Map Base in Mobile Atlas Creator?

The highcountry will be opening up soon and is calling out to me, here's hoping.

Thank You for Your Consideration and Your Great Work.

Hi mwbrian,

I am sorry but your message reads like it should contain several links, however I can only see underlined text areas that have no links behind them
Please read the MOBAC FAQ and MOBAC README before posting.

No problem. I apologize I am not a developer and a GPS rookie so I’ll try again

The USGS Map Base at the USGS National Map Viewer website http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/viewer/ and sat imagery is now available in Mobile Atlas Creator 1.9.16, AWESOME!

But the base map alone is washed out and has too little terrain features’ names, and no trail data that are critical for use by backcounty travelers as nav aids. It needs an overlay that can be selected from the USGS National Map Viewer website http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/viewer/ Overlays tab in the pane to the left of the map itself. If I could post screenshots and additional links to the overlay I would.

The name of the overlay is Scanned Topo Maps From USA Topo.

The Scanned Topo Maps From USA Topo overlay is found In the pane to the left of the map pane on the USGS National Map Viewer website http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/viewer/. Below the Base Data Layers section that is expanded by default, is the Other Featured Data section.

If you go to the USGS National Map Viewer website http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/viewer/ and click on the Other Featured Data link to expand that section, then click on the box next to Scanned Topo Maps From USA Topo, it will load the overlay that contains many more terrain features' names, bodies of water names, and trail data that are critical for use by backcounty travelers as nav aids.

I emailed the USGS Systems Development Branch Chief Brian Fox who graciously left his contact info for you, to let him know that you hopefully might connect with him to find out if the Scanned Topo Maps From USA Topo overlay could be added to the USGS Map Base that is now available in Mobile Atlas Creator 1.9.16.

I hope you’ll take a couple of minutes to look at the the USGS National Map Viewer website http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/viewer/ , explore the Scanned Topo Maps From USA Topo overlay to see the features it adds, and then contact Brian Fox at 303-202-4140 , bfox@usgs.gov to determine if the Scanned Topo Maps From USA Topo overlay can be displayed with the USGS Map Base in MOBAC.

Thank You Again for Your Consideration and Your Great Work.

I am sorry but this crap USGS National Map Viewer always refuses to work in any browser I use and I don't know what is the problem with this stupid software.

Anyway I remember a conversation with Brian Fox about some layers from their website that are provided by a 3rd party web site called "Arc GIS online". Those maps can not be used by MOBAC because the Arc GIS online license does not allow offline usage. AFAIR this applies to the "USGS Scanned Maps".

Robert:

I'd previously sent a query putting Canadian government (Natural Resources Canada) online topo data specifically back into MOBAC. NRCan has an OGL and shares fully with OSM now: see http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gis.openstreetmap.region.ca/3287 and http://data.gc.ca/eng/open-government-licence-canada.

NRCan copyright and licensing officer Joanne Tremblay responded to my request as follows:

Dear Bruce, thank you for your interest in data produced by Natural Resources Canada.

The Open Government Licence - Canada (OGL) applies to the use of the Toporama and CanVec+ data and no further permission is required. You will note that this licence agreement gives free and unrestricted use of the data. You can review the full licensing agreement at the following page: http://data.gc.ca/eng/open-government-licence-canada

You may also be interested in our Web Mapping Services:

Please note that all data and services available on the GeoGratis and Atlas of Canada websites fall under the OGL.

I would be happy to forward that email to you for your records.

Given this, and that you had said here https://sourceforge.net/p/mobac/feature-requests/197/ that you solved the technical issues a few years back, just before you locked down to those map sources for which you had use-rights confirmation, could you please put NRCan topo back into your list of map sources now? It would be a great value to a lot of people. There's a lot of outdoors up here.

Best,

BruceR

Hi Bruce, thanks for your effort.

I had to dig a little bit in the SVN of MOBAC for recovering the NRCan topo source code but in the end I found it and pasted it back into the current MOBAC version.
